John Torode Thrives Post-MasterChef with Lucrative YouTube Venture

Former MasterChef judge John Torode has found a new, highly successful and lucrative path following his departure from the BBC show. Alongside his wife, actress Lisa Faulkner, Torode has launched a popular YouTube cooking channel, “John and Lisa’s Kitchen & Home,” which has garnered significant viewership and commercial interest, reportedly earning him more than his previous BBC role.

The couple’s YouTube channel, which debuted eight months prior to the original reporting, has amassed over 1.2 million views. It features the pair cooking from their home kitchen in Muswell Hill, London, sharing family recipes and engaging in lighthearted banter. This format has resonated strongly with viewers, who have praised their chemistry and approachable style.

A New Culinary Chapter for John Torode

Torode, known for his direct and often critical judging style on MasterChef, has showcased a softer, more relaxed persona in his new online venture. He and Faulkner, 54, engage in playful teasing and laughter while preparing dishes, creating an intimate and entertaining viewing experience. Sources close to the couple describe their dynamic as akin to television personalities Richard and Judy, highlighting their broad appeal.

The success of “John and Lisa’s Kitchen & Home” has led to significant earnings through advertising revenue and their own branded cookware range, J&L. This financial success, coupled with a forthcoming book, suggests a prosperous new phase for Torode, 61, outside of traditional broadcast television.

Viewer Engagement and Commercial Success

The channel’s content, ranging from “the perfect pavlova” to Lisa’s “legendary” roast potatoes, has attracted a dedicated following. Viewers have commented on the couple’s chemistry, particularly Lisa’s witty remarks and John’s often comically oblivious reactions. This engaging dynamic has attracted advertisers, with major brands like HSBC and Monzo banks featuring campaigns on their pages.

One insider remarked that the couple’s independent success is “the ultimate sod you” to the BBC, implying a sense of vindication after Torode’s unceremonious exit from MasterChef. The show’s production company, Banijay UK, commissioned a report that upheld 45 out of 83 allegations of inappropriate behaviour against co-presenter Gregg Wallace, which led to both Torode and Wallace being removed from the program. Torode has stated he has no recollection of the specific incident he was accused of, which involved allegedly using a racial slur at a 2019 wrap party.

MasterChef’s Shifting Landscape

Torode and Wallace had co-hosted MasterChef since 2005. Their departures occurred during a period of change at the BBC, with new director general Matt Brittin expressing interest in exploring user-generated content and YouTube-style platforms for the broadcaster’s iPlayer service. This strategic shift by the BBC leadership may lead them to reconsider past decisions regarding talent.

A friend of the couple commented on the situation, suggesting that while Wallace’s dismissal was warranted, Torode’s exit felt like an attempt to reset the show. They added that the couple’s proven popularity on YouTube is likely to be a source of envy for the BBC.

The Couple’s Journey Together

Lisa Faulkner has been a steadfast support for John Torode since his departure from MasterChef. The couple first met in 2010 when Faulkner competed on Celebrity MasterChef, which she ultimately won. At the time, both were married to other partners. Following the dissolution of their respective marriages, Torode and Faulkner began a relationship and married in 2019.

Faulkner’s support has been instrumental, and she has occasionally incorporated subtle nods to their past and Torode’s BBC exit into their online content. In one video, she playfully referred to John as “the MasterChef” while he demonstrated how to poach an egg, a lighthearted jab at his former role.

Looking Ahead

Despite the success of their YouTube channel and a second cookery book on the horizon, their ITV show, “John and Lisa’s Weekend Kitchen,” may not return. However, the couple appears unfazed, embracing their current ventures with enthusiasm. Their independent success demonstrates their strong appeal and ability to connect with audiences beyond the constraints of traditional television formats.

The couple’s journey from meeting on a competitive cooking show to building a thriving digital media presence highlights their enduring partnership and culinary expertise. Their ability to adapt and innovate, particularly in the rapidly evolving digital landscape, has cemented their status as popular and influential figures in the world of food and television.
