Cuba’s coastguard killed 4 individuals on a speedboat from Florida who opened hearth off the Cuban coast on Wednesday, the inside ministry in Havana stated.

The ship was one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino canal in Cayo Falcones, the ministry stated in a assertion. When 5 members of the Border Guard Troops approached the boat for identification, these aboard the speedboat allegedly started taking pictures. The commander of the Cuban boat was injured, the ministry stated.

“Because of the confrontation,” 4 individuals aboard the speedboat had been killed and 6 had been injured, the ministry stated. The injured events “had been evacuated and acquired medical help.”

It isn’t clear who was within the Florida-registered speedboat, the place they had been from or what their purpose was for getting into Cuban waters or opening hearth. An investigation is ongoing, the ministry stated.

Florida Rep. María Elvira Salazar stated she was “carefully monitoring studies” of the incident, calling it an “unfolding state of affairs.” Rep. Carlos Gimenez, who was born in Cuba, referred to as the incident a “bloodbath” and stated using deadly drive in opposition to people on a ship registered to the U.S. raises critical considerations.

The Cuban authorities stated it remained dedicated to “defending its territorial waters.”

Tensions between the USA and Cuba have been escalating just lately, with President Trump placing new sanctions and tariffs on the Caribbean nation after the operation to seize former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
