Authorities have detained a 50-year-old Burundian man suspected of orchestrating the 2014 murders of three Italian missionary nuns in Bujumbura, Burundi’s industrial hub. Prosecutors in Parma introduced the arrest of Guillaume Harushimana on Thursday, linking him to the killings of Olga Rachietti, 83, Lucia Pulici, 75, and Bernadetta Boggian, 79, throughout assaults on September 7-8, 2014.

Suspected Function and Key Figures

Harushimana faces expenses of instigating, co-organizing, and logistically aiding the assaults. Officers state the orders originated from Normal Adolphe Nshimirimana, former head of Burundi’s secret police, who was assassinated in 2015. As one of many common’s aides, Harushimana allegedly facilitated the operation.

Potential Motives

Investigators level to a number of potential causes: the nuns’ refusal to ship medical help to Burundian militias working in Congo, conflicts over funding for a youth middle in Kamenge, or involvement in a sacrificial ceremony.

Execution Suspects

4 people stay suspects in finishing up the murders. Two offered confessions over the radio, a bodyguard linked to the final was interrogated in Parma and partially acknowledged the occasions, whereas a fourth perpetrator has but to be recognized.

Investigation Revival

Italian authorities reactivated the case in 2024 following leads from investigative journalist Giusy Baioni’s e-book. This uncovered testimonies from different nuns ignored by prior inquiries. Harushimana’s identify had surfaced earlier; he entered Italy in 2018 on a visa for coaching in Parma, the place questioning occurred. He denied involvement, citing passport stamps proving his absence from Burundi on the time.

Efforts to contact Burundi officers and Harushimana yielded no response.
