In December of 1983, the Rev. Jesse Jackson went to Syria to hunt the discharge of an American airman who had been shot down there. That went towards the needs of President Ronald Reagan, who thought Jackson was grandstanding to jump-start his personal marketing campaign for the White Home. Reagan additionally feared that Jackson’s intercession may trigger the Syrians to dig of their heels and even to hurt Navy Lieutenant Robert O. Goodman Jr., the captured airman.
