To the editor: It was inspiring, if not edifying, to examine our college students from so many excessive colleges protesting in opposition to the nationwide immigration raids (“‘We wish a change to occur.’ L.A. County college students stroll out over ICE raids,” Jan. 30). Moreover, it was additionally encouraging to learn that American-born Pope Leo XIV was setting a powerful and brave exhortation to the U.S. Convention of Catholic Bishops by “forcefully” condemning Washington’s “aggressive ways” (“L.A. archbishop holds ‘Mass for Peace’ as college students protest Trump immigration insurance policies,” Feb. 4). Sure, now could be the time for all good residents to indicate up and converse up for “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” for all.
Maybe the salient phrases of Thomas Jefferson in his letter to George Washington on Jan. 4, 1786, seize my sentiments: “It’s an axiom in my thoughts that our liberty can by no means be protected however within the arms of the individuals themselves.”
