Goonhilly Earth Station Bolsters NASA’s Lunar Efforts
A satellite tv for pc earth station close to Helston in Cornwall helps NASA’s Artemis II mission by monitoring the Orion spacecraft on its path across the Moon and again to Earth.
The ability delivered very important communication and monitoring companies for the Artemis I mission in 2022.
Capabilities Highlighted by CTO Matthew Cosby
Matthew Cosby, chief know-how officer at Goonhilly Earth Station, explains: “We commonly help about three or 4 deep house missions. The infrastructure dates again to the early days; our elevated place above the ocean gives an unobstructed horizon view. Expert groups function the antennas, backed by a long time within the house sector.”
Cosby continues: “Touchdown operations demand a number of antennas to retrieve knowledge. Artemis II showcases our confirmed capability, following success with Artemis I, the place NASA welcomed our return. This positions Cornwall on the coronary heart of a landmark endeavor.”
Engineer’s View from the Frontlines
Deep house community mission operations engineer Oliver Hancock, 26, calls the work “fairly cool” and ground-breaking. A Cornwall native, he pursued physics at college and a grasp’s in meteorology earlier than returning residence. “Making use of these expertise in such a good looking area feels unimaginable,” Hancock states.
