To the editor: The state of California has been trying to guard younger transgender public faculty college students by stopping faculty staff from notifying mother and father about these college students’ gender expression (“California legislation that forbids ‘pressured outing’ of trans college students blocked by ninth Circuit,” June 22). How tragic that this safety could also be blocked.
Let me watch out to state that I notice transgender individuals and homosexual individuals are not the identical.
We keep in mind that just a few many years in the past, many homosexual individuals protected themselves by remaining closeted, at occasions lengthy into maturity. Most mother and father would have been shocked, even horrified to be taught that their kids have been homosexual.
Fortunately these days, many and even most homosexual younger individuals are much more comfy with their identification. I want lets say the identical for transgender individuals.
A lot of the present challenge focuses on “parental rights.” How about teenagers’ rights? How about respect for who they’re? For his or her identities, their fears, their hopes, their discomfort and their decisions?
The relationships between transgender teenagers and their mother and father range significantly. If faculty authorities notified mother and father that their kids have been transgender, some mother and father would yell, disgrace them and presumably kick them out of the home. Different mother and father could be understanding and sort. Transgender college students are keenly conscious of the forms of relationships they’ve with their mother and father; let the teenagers determine when and the way or whether or not to inform their mother and father.
As for varsity authorities, practice each considered one of them, whether or not janitor or principal, in pay attention with kindness and openness, and be supportive when a transgender pupil confides in them.

To the editor: This text begins with the next wording: “California’s effort to defend the selections of transgender college students in public faculties from the eyes of prying mother and father stays on maintain.” The pejorative use of the phrase “prying” to explain the pursuits of fine mother and father is telling. Being lively and attentive are constructive qualities in mother and father that mildew well-adjusted kids.
