A protest in downtown Los Angeles in opposition to the continued actions of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement grew heated Saturday afternoon, with police declaring an illegal meeting.

Just a few dozen anti-ICE protesters had gathered round midday and started adorning the fence surrounding the Metropolitan Detention Middle in downtown L.A. with silicone phalli of all colours — pink, purple and human skin-colored.

Because the toys piled up outdoors the power, a small group of protesters spilled onto Alameda Road, between Aliso and Temple streets. They carried indicators studying “Detention facilities are focus camps” and “No ICE.”

Protests in L.A. and elsewhere within the U.S., pushed by outrage over intensified federal immigration enforcement, have been infected in current months by the deadly shootings of two protesters and the aggressive ways utilized by federal brokers in Minneapolis earlier this yr.

“Keep out of the road. You’ll not block visitors at this time,” an officer stated via a megaphone.

A number of protesters confronted legislation enforcement officers, who wore riot gear, earlier than shifting again to the sidewalk in entrance of the detention middle.

Officers moved their autos again however approached protesters on the sidewalk on foot, the place the confrontation continued.

At round 3:30 p.m., the LAPD issued an alert saying it had declared an illegal meeting within the space “[d]ue to acts of prison habits by a number of agitators” and had made arrests.

LAPD Lt. Bruce Coss stated the protest was not permitted and that at about 2:30 p.m., protesters had been “obstructing the road” and “stopping vehicles,” prompting police to declare an illegal meeting and evacuate the realm.
