Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Protection Pete Hegseth briefed lawmakers Wednesday on the Trump administration’s plans for Venezuela.



MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

Now to the opposite main story we’re following – the Trump administration’s plans for Venezuela. The administration has unveiled a three-pronged plan for the nation. It begins with a U.S. quarantine that features Washington’s management of Venezuelan oil gross sales. The main points emerge from a closed-door briefing that Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Protection Secretary Pete Hegseth gave lawmakers after the weekend army operation that led to the seize of Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro. Congress was not informed about it prematurely. NPR congressional correspondent Barbara Sprunt experiences on what lawmakers discovered yesterday.

BARBARA SPRUNT, BYLINE: These have been the primary complete briefings for rank-and-file members who’ve been ready for days to listen to straight from the administration concerning the operation that led to Maduro’s seize.

SPRUNT: As lawmakers emerge from the labeled assembly, the partisan divide was on full show. Republicans praised the operation. Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin even stated it was among the finest briefings he is ever acquired in Congress.

MOULTON: I believe the army clearly had a plan, however I believe this administration is totally winging it.

SPRUNT: Here is how Secretary of State Marco Rubio responded to that precise critique.
