Tom Jung’s 1977 ‘Star Wars’ Paintings Fetches $3.9 M. at Public sale

At a Heritage Auctions sale of Hollywood memorabilia in Dallas on Wednesday, a Star Wars portray offered for $3.88 million, breaking the file for an object related to the sequence.

The work, a portray by illustrator Tom Jung, served as the unique half-sheet poster for Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope when it was first launched in 1977. The work was consigned by the household of the movie’s producer Gary Kurtz, who has owned it because it was first produced by Jung.

The work first appeared in nationwide newspapers on Could 13, 1977, two weeks earlier than the movie’s launch, marking the primary picture used to extensively promote the movie. The work was subsequently used for the movie’s official program, billboards, and journal and newspaper advertisements.

“This isn’t only a milestone for Star Wars. It’s a landmark second for your complete discipline of popular culture collectibles and art work,” Charles Epting, Heritage’s director of popular culture and historic consignments, mentioned in a press release. “This portray outlined the visible language one of the crucial beloved movies of all time, and its impression clearly nonetheless resonates with collectors on the highest degree.”

Following the movie’s launch, the portray hung in Kurtz’s workplace in San Rafael, California, earlier than shifting with him to his residence.

The $3.88 million value achieved for the portray exceeds the $3.6 million paid for Darth Vader’s lightsaber prop in September at Propstore in Los Angeles and the $3.13 million support for a “Crimson Chief” X-Wing miniature at Heritage Auctions Dallas in 2023.

The earlier file for a piece of film poster artwork was set in July at Heritage for the $687,500 sale of Bob Peak’s Apocalypse Now art work.
