The state of Illinois and Chicago are suing the Trump administration over their plans to deploy the Nationwide Guard.
“The American folks, no matter the place they reside, shouldn’t stay below the specter of occupation by the USA navy, notably not just because their metropolis or state management has fallen out of a president’s favor,” the lawsuit states in its introduction.
Within the lawsuit, which names each the state of Illinois and the town of Chicago as plaintiffs, Illinois Lawyer Common Kwame Raoul writes, “Defendants’ deployment of federalized troops to Illinois is patently illegal.” He continues, “Plaintiffs ask this courtroom to halt the unlawful, harmful, and unconstitutional federalization of members of the Nationwide Guard of the USA, together with each the Illinois and Texas Nationwide Guard.”
Over the weekend, a federal memo obtained by CBS Information revealed as much as 300 members of the Illinois Nationwide Guard can be federalized and deployed to “shield federal property” and “authorities personnel performing federal capabilities.”
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker confirmed that memo and stated he had additionally been informed a further 400 different Nationwide Guard members from Texas can be deployed to Chicago and Portland, Oregon.
