Macquarie College astronomers have tracked an excessive planet’s orbital decay, confirming it’s spiralling in the direction of its star in a cosmic demise dance that would finish in three potential methods.

The ultra-hot Jupiter exoplanet TOI-2109b, situated 870 light-years from Earth, completes an orbit round its star in simply 16 hours – making it the closest scorching Jupiter ever found.

With a mass almost 5 instances that of Jupiter and nearly twice Jupiter’s dimension, TOI-2109b orbits even nearer to its star than Mercury does to our Solar.

The findings recommend some rocky planets in different photo voltaic methods may be the stripped cores of former gasoline giants – a risk that would reshape our understanding of planetary evolution.

With continued monitoring over the following three to 5 years, astronomers will detect the anticipated orbital adjustments, offering real-time statement of a planetary system in its demise throes.
